Extreme Bandwidth

Extreme Bandwidth (EB) systems occupy several Gigahertz up to several tens of Gigahertz of a wireless channel. Such enormous bandwidth is typically available for short range systems only, either due to technological reasons – e.g. a limited transmit power of EB devices, or due to regulation by a public authority – i.e. to limit the interference of EB devices to other wireless systems. The major challenging real-world scenarios of EB systems are characterized by Such high data rates will be provided by the successor of today’s WiFi systems, e.g. for data off-loading to quickly transfer huge amount of data into the cloud. In contrast, the highly accurate localization capability is useful for precise navigation of robots, e.g. for well serving the needs of elderly people in their living environment. Today’s examples for EB systems are classical Ultra Wideband (UWB) systems, typically regulated for 3.1-10.6 GHz, or 60 GHz short range WiFi systems, typically regulated for 57-64 GHz. Such bandwidth of approx. 7 GHz is the maximum available bandwidth below 100 GHz carrier frequency, so that future wireless communication and localization systems may approach the Terahertz frequency range.
